Mississauga Mayoral Election Oct. 26, 2026
The Political Comeback

BONNIE CROMBIE LEFT MISSISSAUGA

Now she is back running for mayor because she has "something to prove"

SHE LEFT MISSISSAUGA.
In 2024, Bonnie Crombie left the mayor's office to become Ontario Liberal leader.
She said she hoped to continue serving Mississauga from Queen's Park.
Then came 2025.
Crombie lost her provincial election.
In January 2026, she resigned as Liberal leader.
Now she's back.
Running for the mayor's job she left.

For nearly a decade, Bonnie Crombie ran Mississauga. Then, days after winning the Ontario Liberal leadership in December 2023, she set her sights higher — stepping down as mayor in January 2024 to try to become premier.

It didn't work. In the February 2025 election, the Liberals were shut out of the premier's office, and Crombie didn't even win a seat in the legislature — voters in her own riding of Mississauga East–Cooksville rejected her, choosing Silvia Gualtieri instead. For the first time in over a decade, Crombie held no elected office at all.

She said she'd stay on as Liberal leader anyway. Eleven months later, she was gone from that job too — and this past summer, she registered to run for the very office she'd walked away from.

On Registering to Run Again
“I have something to prove.”
— Bonnie Crombie, after filing her mayoral registration, July 2026

A Hill Too High to Climb

Crombie walked away from the security of running Ontario's third-largest city to make a run at the province's top job — and came away with neither. Now she wants the job back that she once treated as a stepping stone.

Mississauga deserves a mayor focused on Mississauga.
Not a political comeback.
